My Personal Experience With Examination Malpractice

I am not just talking; I have some practical experience. I must admit that on some few occasions in my student years at the Basic and Secondary level, I got involved in examination malpractice.

What did I actually do? It ranged from asking a friend for an answer; say number 14 or number 25 of the Section A question paper, to giving an answer to a friend who quietly called for my attention. In doing all this, when we saw the invigilator coming, we quickly behaved ourselves.

I vividly remember one time during a science test, when I attempted copying from a science note book that was in my desk, and the corresponding knock I received from my science teacher (now Pastor Gabriel Ametorwu, a.k.a. Gezere) who was monitoring me without my knowledge. That is what we call invigilation!

I also remembered a day in 1999 when at our basic level, myself and another friend went to the staff common room after school to fill in a gap we had left during a test. Not only that, we did the same for two girls we claimed we liked without telling them we liked them. The teacher found out later, but we denied doing anything (the sins of my teenage years).

My Personal Experience With Examination Malpractice

Perhaps, the one that made an impact on me happened when I was writing my private SSCE at Anloga in the Volta Region. It so happened that early that day, while preparing for the Geography paper, I felt pressed to revise a topic called VOLCANIC LANDFORMS.

It urge became so strong to the point that I was hearing volcano…volcano…volcano in my head.

As I arrived at the center that morning, I saw a group of students discussing some questions (apor). Instead of going my way to revise my ‘volcano’, I joined them and before I could realize, time was far spent so I couldn’t revise anything again.

Lo and behold, I got into the exam hall, received my paper only to see the abandoned and ignored volcanic landforms erupting in my face in Paper 2. I could not tackle it the way I should have since I had limited knowledge on it. To make matters worse for me, I made another terrible and unforgivable mistake in one of the questions – till date, I believe it was a punishment from God for disobedience. Long story made short, I had a ‘D’ in that paper.

Few days later, we wrote ECONOMICS, and fully armed with that experience, I decided never to even get close to any ‘apor’ paper again. After the first part of the paper, a dear friend approached me and told me about a leaked Economics paper which was likely to ‘drop’.

With much boldness, I responded, WHAT GO HAPPEN, MAKE E HAPPEN. That is to say, I will not watch. I went alone to do my revision and it will interest you to know that I made an ‘A’ in that paper.

So you see, I have a history. I am not ranting because I don’t have any work to do. I am angry because we have seen examination invigilators before and some of the current ones we are seeing are an embarrassment to the system. This is why I am mad at teachers and invigilators who are neck deep into this canker.

Like I always admit, examination malpractice will always be in existence just like the proverbial ‘corruption’. However, the manner in which some teachers and invigilators are adding to the deadly disease, calls for a careful introspection. If the gatekeeper whose job it is to prevent crime is involved in aiding and abetting the crime, then the concomitant problem created is bigger than we think.
