Why I don’t Allow My Children to watch Broda Shaggi and Mr. Macaroni Comedy

I started watching comedy at a very young age. My dad who is a big fan of the arts and drama had a lot of video cassettes in that regard, growing up in Nigeria. I remember very well that before the age of 10, I had already watched characters like Zubrudaya, Jegede Sokoya, Clarus, Jagua, Papi Aluwey just to mention but a few. This was the late 80s to the early 90s.

The comedy industry has ballooned today to a multi-million dollar industry in Nigeria alone and just at the tip of your finger you can watch loads of comedy from the good, the bad, and the ugly.

The truth is that I really love comedy. For me, it’s not about making people laugh but every comedy is a message. The fact that they make us laugh does not mean they are not serious people. Most comedians are some of the most serious people you can ever meet outside the stage.

As a preacher, I see some comedians as interpreters of what we preach. After all our sermons on the pulpit, comedians serve as gifted interpreters who use their craft to break the messages to applicable doses. They do this with a strong humor element and satire.

Even though the comedy industry is booming, there are some comedians I will not waste my data watching.  Though they are gifted, their words give them out. They joke with anything and they do so without boundaries. For those kinds of comedians, it’s a big NO for me. For me and comedy, I am mindful of this scripture below

Eph 5:4  Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.

There are, however, others whom I have a soft spot for. They may not be Christian in the true sense in their presentation but the truth of the matter is that they are good at what they do. Two of such individuals among a few of my favorites are Broda Shaggi(Samuel Animashaun Perry) and Mr Macaroni( Debo Adebayo).

I consider Broda shaggi  as an interpreter of the true area boy scenes on the street of Lagos. He does it so well with humor and satire. Over the years he has also added a touch of excellence to his craft.

Mr Macaroni is also very good at what he does. He portrays the sugar daddy factor in our big cities with a lot of sensual inclinations. His skits most of the time are about getting punished for trying to take advantage of women and issues around infidelity in relationships.

Though I watch these people sometimes, I have realized that the generation we have today is kind of different when it comes to smart phone and social media.

The kind of comedy Brother Shaggi does is not for children. Though I admire his gift, his harshness and tone are not things you want your children to emulate. Remember whether you like it or not, children will become what they watch always.

The same is for Mr. Macaroni. Unless you want to always be with your children interpreting or doing damage control to some of the skits, you may be feeding your kids food that is not ripe for their age.

Please don’t get me wrong. If you leave the smartphone to the accessibility of your children and don’t have boundaries, I can assure you that they will watch things you will not be comfortable with. This will be a route to the destination of anxiety and pain over the lives of your children for today and the future.

These two comedians are not the only humorists online but for me, they are part of the few I happen to watch sometimes.

For you as a parent, you know what will feed your children and what will not. Some contents in comedy may be good for your consumption because you are discerning and matured but they may be toxic for your children. I rest my pen!
