As a young, vibrant lady who loved trying new things, she decided to become an invigilator for a West African certificate examination. Although she had no prior experience, she saw it as an opportunity to gain some experience. It was also a means of earning some extra income to take care of a few things.

She got on board and began her work. Soon, she realized there was a WhatsApp group for invigilators, which initially seemed like a good idea for coordinating during the season and working together as a team.

However, things took a frustrating turn when she observed candidates disregarding rules, sneaking in unauthorized materials, or attempting to cheat off each other despite warnings.

One day, she returned home particularly frustrated. It was just an invigilation job that would be over in weeks, but what she discovered on the invigilators’ WhatsApp group pushed her over the edge. Some were discussing how much they would charge students to help them cheat in the exam.

So, she left never to return

She couldn’t believe what she was reading—it seemed utterly unethical and disgraceful to her. The discussions were gaining momentum as so-called invigilators proposed various sums of money. It became clear why she felt like an outsider among the other invigilators, and why some seemed indifferent to the ethics of the examination.

Feeling betrayed and unsure whom to trust, as almost everyone seemed comfortable with the idea of profiting from cheating. She made a difficult decision—to walk away.

Yes, she left, even though she had been invigilating for some time and wouldn’t be paid for it. For her, maintaining her sanity and dignity was more important than compromising her values for temporary gain.

In case you’re wondering, this is a true story she shared with me personally. I was proud of her for standing her ground and upholding her values.

This situation reflects a troubling trend in Ghana and Africa. Young people increasingly disregard values and believe they can achieve anything by paying their way through.

It’s disheartening, but I believe voices of conscience will rise to address this issue. This will ensure the safety and integrity of our children and society as a whole.
