An Open Letter to Yul Edochie
An Open Letter to Yul Edochie
Good day Sir.
I want to first of all thank God for your life and your family. You just turned 41 and I wish you more years of fulfillment and peace in Christ’s name.
At your age, you have achieved so much in your chosen career. Honestly, I didn’t know about you until recently. It was your father I knew so well, having watched Things Fall Apart for the first time in the early 90s growing up in Nigeria.
When I moved to Ghana, I read the book and it made a huge impact on my love for stories. That’s just by the way…
The truth of the matter is that I feel a little awkward trying to write you an open letter. What moral right do I have to comment on someone’s private life? What business do I have running my mouth on issues that may far be beyond my vision?
Well, I am writing to you based on certain convictions I have.
I am writing to you because you chose to make your private life public. Since it has gone public, the court of public opinion has been having its say.
I have taken time to read some of the comments of people who stood for you and those who disagreed with you and I have drawn some insights from them.

Another reason why I feel compelled to say something is that, whether you like it or not, or people agree or not, you are famous in your chosen career.
Not only do you operate in an industry that shapes culture in this modern generation, many young people also listen to you. They watch your movies and whatever you do, some will do too. That’s how influential movie stars like you are.
In this day and age where movies and music are major influencers of culture more than the church sadly, I see it as an irresponsibility on my part not to speak up when matters of this nature come up, particularly, if it has a ripple effect on society and young people for that matter.
I had just started following you on Facebook when you posted a picture of your newborn son to the entire world.
Social media went ballistic and you did enjoy the flow. Some days on your Facebook page, you could have 50 to 60 thousand comments. I was truly amazed.
For me, the issue is this: I know that marriage comes before babies follow. I would have been happier if we saw your marriage ceremony with your second wife, then your followers will know that a baby will be coming soon.
The question one will beg to ask is this. Did the pregnancy necessitate the marriage or the marriage came before the baby?
As I said earlier, these are matters of your private life. I am however commenting on them and raising questions because you chose to make your private issue a public one.

Also, marriage though private has always worn a public spectacle since time immemorial. That is why the thirteen children of Jacob from his four wives is public knowledge. That is why the story of David and Bathsheba though in bad taste is an open record for us to learn from today.
Now, to the issue of marrying a second wife, you said that what people are doing secretly, you have been bold to make it public. You sincerely have a point there.

Only God knows how many thousands of people are secretly having children out of wedlock. Interestingly, some of them will also join in to criticize you. You are right about that. The hypocrisy we display as humans is alarming and scary.
Sir, you don’t need to respond to my letter. You may not even see it let alone read it but the truth is that your being bold regarding a decision taken does not make the said decision right.
I won’t judge you but you have a following who may jump on the bandwagon simply because Yul has done it. And that is where my fear lies
Sir, you also made a post one of the days saying you are a man of God and also, are a bold-chested polygamous man. Now, who am I to dispute the first part of the claim?
But then, Sir, since you are a man of God, I think it is appropriate for me to draw your attention to one tiny scripture from the book we both revere. 2 Timothy 3:2 is clear on what a man of God should do with regards to a wife.

I also read Reno Omokri’s defense of your decision. After justifying it with a lot of Biblical narratives and defending you, he concluded however that, he will not advise anyone to marry more than one wife. Hmm! Well, that discourse will remain for another day…
I will not say more but then, I know for a fact that he who marries two wives has a high propensity to marry the third one. I wonder what your second wife will also say or feel if ‘madam 3’ arrives.
Sir, I don’t have money as you have. I am not as popular and famous as you are. When it comes to popularity and riches, I may not even be qualified to comment on your issue. But there is a spirit in man and the inspiration of the Almighty gives understanding.
Finally, before I close my boring letter, Sir, can you minimize your trying to prove a point on social media? It doesn’t help matters, especially to the point of bringing your children into it. Social media does not care ooooo, unless it’s a strategy to gain more fame. Well, what do I know?
Yul Odugwu Ezedike Edochie, from the bottom of my heart, I wish you well. I pray that the Lord will sustain you and give you a discerning heart to know and seek him.
Like I earlier on said, I am only doing this because, people are following you, particularly young people. It will not be a good thing to ‘mislead’ them.
For the love of God, society, and young people, I rest my pen.
Blessings my brother.
