Experience could be the best teacher but it must not always be your Personal Experience. Read Why!

Experience is the best teacher! Does this expression sound familiar? Off course it should, particularly if you have lived around motivational speakers long enough.

Having spent a greater part of my youthful life teaching and talking to teenagers, I have been quite disturbed whenever this expression is used. Disturbed because I sometimes sense danger when the expression is used.

Young people use this expression to justify any vice they want to undertake. For example, she wants a boyfriend because experience is the best teacher, his friends are forcing him to smoke because experience is the best teacher.

These and many more experiences have trapped many young people into experiencing the bitter pills of life. Most times, they don’t even learn from the so-called experience they talk about.

The truth of the matter is that Experience could be the best teacher. An experience of any kind is a force to reckon with as far as personal development and life are concerned. What you experience is your personal testimony- whether good or bad.

What you experience is your stamp of involvement. Since you were involved, you know better and you can talk about it better.

However, I always insist that though experience could be a very good teacher, it should not necessarily be your personal experiences.

These are my reasons:

Firstly, how long do you think you will live to want to experience before you learn? Life is so short that craving to experience before you learn is not a wise idea.

Secondly, I ask the bitter question. What if you die experiencing? You don’t need to experience at all times before you learn. In some experiences, if care is not taken, you may tragically end your life all in the name of what you want to experience.

Do you know for example that a lot of lives could be saved on our roads if not for the fact that people want to experience speed driving?

What of young people who have gone ‘mental’ just because they wanted to taste and see what it means to go high on drugs?

My point here is that experiences of other people are equally important in this race of life.

Millions of people have lived before you also arrived. Their experiences are for our guidance and counsel. There are experiences of people that we must not follow. The outcome of their action spells doom. So, wanting to equally experience it before you learn from it could be foolish.

What is the conclusion of my argument? Your personal experience is a great treasure. However, you should not only rely on your experience before you learn the lessons of life.

Learn from every experience, whether from the young or old. From the rich or the poor.

As important as your personal experience can be, the experiences of other people are necessary for your change process. Somebody’s twenty-year experience can cheaply be at your disposal in a 200 paged book. It took him twenty years of experience to write that book but you can use two days to acquire the knowledge shared in the book.

Be wise and don’t die before your time.
