SWAPPING THE CASKET MONEY (Part 1)
This life is not balanced. Am I at fault? Try and judge. My uncle is threatening me and saying I disgraced him.
This is my story. Life has been very difficult for my family since I was a child. It is still difficult, but now I have learnt to persevere.
My father was a local tailor who tried to make ends meet. No matter how he pulled the rope, there was still a wide distance between both ends. He had a partial childhood that made him not to focus on schooling. He dropped out early just to learn a trade. If I say difficult, it was truly difficult
His elder brother, however, had things going for him and his family. The only challenge was that it never trickled down to his brother, my father.
My father tried his best to send me to school. With the little money he had, he tried, of which I am grateful.
While Uncle resided in the city and lived his life to the fullest, we managed the family house in the village. Honestly, I don’t blame my uncle for my father’s predicament. May be my dad would have pushed harder, and the walls of limitation would have fallen flat.
I had just finished Senior High School when my father fell sick. We tried our best, but his health was worsening. It became so serious that I had no option but to call my uncle. He lamented that things were not in good shape and that I would definitely hear from him.

After calling several times, I stopped calling because it was clear that I was troubling him. I don’t want my father to die, I prayed. How will I survive? My mother had no muscle to shoulder a secondary education, and the sewing business is not fetching enough.
One day, my father called me to his bedside and gave me a shocking news. After clearing his throat, he told me to lift up his old sewing machine. I did, and to my amazement, I saw money
Papa! What is money doing here when I need to buy medicine for you. Why Papa? This is not fair! I agree, my son. Life in general is not fair! I kept that money to cater for your school fees. It is just a quarter of your fees, but I believe there will be a way out. I was saving it before this illness started.
Take good care of your mother. Always remember that the presence of pain is not the absence of God.Papa, why all this ! I had not finished saying the second sentence when my father smiled at me and gave up the ghost. My dear reader, I was shattered.
Death has eventually knocked at my door, and it was a pitiable sight to behold. Before long, the whole community was aware, and people started trooping into the family house. Oh God! I am not prepared for this.
From nowhere, my phone rang and it was my uncle. He lamented and told me that he was about to send the money before he heard about the death of his brother. He promised immediately to give him a befitting burial.

He ordered that his mortal remains be sent to the major hospital in our area.
I began to wonder whether I was dreaming. Why? All of a sudden, my uncle became sweet. I tell you the truth, and I kid you not our family house has not witnessed any renovation since my grandfather’s death. But a week after my father’s death, work started.
Three weeks to the funeral, I took the little money my father gave me to pay part payment at the school. Resumption was around the corner, and I needed to make full payment
To my dismay, I was told that my money would not be accepted because it fell too much below the fees. I pleaded and pleaded to no avail. Again, I called my uncle, thinking this time round, his favor would rob on me.
My uncle told me that I should not worry and that he would sort me out after the funeral. I explained to him that by the time the funeral was over, I would have lost my admission. He said I shouldn’t worry. My father’s funeral was to be handled first.

I don’t know what came over him two weeks to the funeral, which happens to be a day to me losing my admission to the school. My uncle sent for me and handed me a huge sum of money. What for? This is the money I should use to buy the casket for my father’s funeral. According to him, he was inviting very notable people and I should not make any mistake. He said he can’t imagine his brother lying in a cheap casket. I left his house that day with tears in my eyes………
