The Principal Culprits In Examination Malpractice

Take it or leave it. That’s my candid opinion. SOME INVIGILATORS AND TEACHERS ARE THE MAIN CULPRITS OF EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE.

In as much as I agree unreservedly that not all invigilators and teachers are engaged in examination malpractice of all sorts, it is without a shadow of doubt, that the involvement of some invigilators in this grievous crime has added another dimension to the canker of Examination Malpractice.

After over ten years of teaching and observing examinations at the basic level, I have come to the conclusion that invigilators and teachers have also contributed immensely to the challenges we are confronted with, as far as examinations are concerned.

It is a well-known fact, that invigilating examinations has become another side hustle for teachers. In as much as I don’t have any problem with that, money should not be the only motivation for a teacher offering him or herself for this duty.

I believe that this noble duty of having oversight responsibility over examinations has been corrupted over the years, and in my humble opinion, one of the people we can’t easily let off the hook are teachers. After several years of close observation, these are my findings!

In the quest to make more money out of the examination process, some teachers and invigilators are fond of helping students so as to curry favour with them. Last two years some group of invigilators in a particular area had to debate on how much they will take from students in order to allow them to cheat in Exams. That’s how seriously blatant and ‘civilized’ we have become as a people.

The Principal Culprits In Examination Malpractice

Another reason for my conclusion on this matter is the game of pride played by teachers and headteachers of schools. Today’s headteacher wants to go to all lengths, whether by fair or foul means, for their pupils to pass so they can get the glory.

There’s nothing wrong with going for glory in principle, but I have a problem if it ends in cheating and the pure disregard for laid down examination rules. You don’t need to be a crook to wear a crown.

Is it not amazing that some teachers of today will carelessly and nonchalantly not do due diligence in preparing their pupils for examination, but will care more in soliciting ‘apor’ for them? I honestly believe that if half of the energy some teachers dissipate in looking for ‘apor’ will be channeled in adequate preparations of students, our results will immensely improve.

This issue of self-glory and first positions, partially emanating from the comparison of results garnered by schools by stakeholders without proper recourse to the peculiar challenges faced in the individual schools, in our towns, circuits and districts, have driven some teachers to cut corners.

The pride of being first has contributed to the widespread of examination malpractice. What joy and pride is in stealing to take the first position?

It’s a pity to note the underhanded methods schools and examination administrators use, just to ‘soften’ the ground for students. Things like writing objective answers on pencils, dictating objective answers to students ,which in some cases are inaccurate, are but just a few of the methods now encouraged in our schools.

I agree that examination malpractice cannot be totally eradicated. Yes it cannot. However, the active involvement of our dear teachers, who are supposed to be the gatekeepers, in the act is making matters worse for us as a society and as a nation and this needs to be tackled expeditiously.

Let us make every attempt to solve the problem rather than letting it destroy the values that we hold dear and the values that we stand for so as not to allow this moral decadence to shred our very moral fibre into pieces.

Until these matters are dealt with, our efforts will not amount to anything.

THIS NONSENSE MUST STOP!
