I tremble in awe and respect as I pen these few words. Not because my hands are feeble to write but because I have learned in life that a child should be careful when he responds to the elderly because what they see sitting he may never see it climbing the tallest Iroko tree.

So, I write this prostrating to the sage in Playwright and an icon in literature. Even my father from whose loins I came, cannot compare himself to Wole Soyinka in Age and accomplishment, how dare a little boy like me.

However, I take the position of Elihu in the book of Job who aired his view on the strength that there is a spirit in a man and the inspiration of the Almighty gives him understanding. So let me dance the consequence of attempting to ask a great man some questions.

During the just-ended elections, I wondered to myself where Prof Wole Soyinka will be pitching his political tent. Being an icon of global relevance and a voice of influence, I was eager to know his stand.

The more I waited, the more I saw nothing. I decided to imagine and this was what my mind told me: It is a known fact that General Olusegun Obasanjo and Prof. Soyinka do not see eye to eye on many fronts. So, I concluded that maybe Prof Soyinka was for Tinubu since Gen. Obasanjo has made his stand clear for Peter Obi.

Well, after the elections my findings on whom Prof Soyinka supported became an oxymoron. In his critique of Datti Baba Ahmed, he revealed that he wanted fresh air in the Nigerian democratic landscape and therefore disappointed at words coming from the mouth of the Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate.

At another stretch, it is becoming clear through some videos I have chanced upon that the Professor rather supported Bola Tinubu.

Let me state here that Prof Soyinka has the right to support whomever he wanted, that is his choice

But if I were his mate, I would ask the good Professor …

Why didn’t he come very clear with his stance like Obasanjo did? I am not saying it is  mandatory but he has left people in confusion because on one hand he is saying he wanted Peter Obi but at another hand, it is been revealed that he was for Tinubu

If I were his mate, I would have asked why he did not condemn the Voter suppression that bedeviled the just-ended elections. I would have asked why before his very eyes thugs told Igbos not to come out to vote. Why was the voice of conscience silent? I thought it would have made a huge impact

It is because I am but a child, if not I will have asked why the Professor did not condemn the violence we saw in Lagos and the rivers. Why didn’t we see Baba?

Before I continue, many people don’t know the caliber of influence Prof Oluwole Soyinka wields. Many people don’t know the level of activism this icon championed in the years of his strength. I once heard that even in the days of General Acheampong in Ghana when his colleague Prof Kofi Awunor was arrested, it took a simple visit of Wole Soyinka to the then head of State, and after the visit, Kofi Awunor was released. That is Prof Wole Soyinka.

Now in his 80s, we don’t expect him to be moving everywhere but he still has an influence that cannot be underestimated. If I were his mate, I would have looked straight into his eyes and asked why he had suddenly jumped on Baba Ahmed’s comment and made a major headline out of it when other people did worse

We didn’t hear a single word from him on the injustice INEC meted on fellow countrymen.

For me, I just want the best for Nigeria. The Nigeria that Prof Soyinka has sacrificed a lot for. I recall how he had to be in exile for years because the military in charge wanted him dead for speaking the truth to power.

Restrain is wisdom when you are talking about the elderly……… at last I am but a child but thank God wisdom is not only for the aged.

I just wish his voice was louder before and during the election and not just after the election.

In the end, may Nigeria Succeed, and may it positively affect the continent of Africa.
