He entered his room only to receive a message from Commander Carlos that there will be a huge reshuffle at the Police headquarters, but he is still trying his very best to help them.
He also added that this time round, he will charge 50 000 cedis if he succeeds in helping his colleague escape.
“This is getting serious”, he said aloud.
“What will I do now? Alhaji too will not pick up calls so we know the next line of action.”
Azuree had also been informed that Interpol has picked up information that one of the Barons has been linked to Nigeria.
The two men stayed in the Guest House for one week without meeting each other.
In Accra, the battle raged on. Yaovi’s accomplice, Benson has refused to talk no matter the pressure and torture they gave him. The more they tortured him, the tougher he became. Not even the threat of a death sentence could make him open his mouth let alone divulge any secret.
At the meeting with the Inspector General of Police, Commander Carlos told the IGP that it was becoming difficult to get any information from Benson. He suggested to the IGP that they move him to another station in the Police Service so they cross-examine him again.
“You are one of my trusted men on this issue. No failure please.”

Unknown to the IGP, they had planned to let him go under the pretense that he fled out of custody.
Commander Carlos upon entering the room where Benson was being cross-examined quickly scribbled the plan on paper and gave it to him to read.
He then called the officers and ordered them to beat him again.
Unknown to the officers on duty, Commander Carlos had stationed his choice of ‘officers in crime’ to overpower the officers on duty.
“You don’t need to carry too many arms while moving the prisoner. We are winning this fight.”
“Sir, please, I think otherwise,” a junior officer interjected. You may never know and you can never tell what will happen in transit.”
“Do you want to teach me my job? When did you join this service.”
Eventually, his words prevailed and Benson was whisked into a standby pickup.”
On their way, they were ambushed by masked men, heavily armed
They in no time disarmed the men on duty and fled with Benson.
The Head Office was immediately notified yet, it took Commander Carlos an extra thirty mins to dispatch another team to the scene. By the time they finally arrived, the men had escaped with the culprit.
All hell broke loose at the Headquarters as Commander Carlos summoned all the officers who went for the operation.
“This is unacceptable!” he raged.
“And you call yourselves professionals? I will make sure you get demoted. Just pray hard that the IGP does not sanction me. If he does, you will all taste my wrath.”
Sergeant Wiredu, the officer who earlier on requested that more arms be taken for the operation decided not to say a word lest he further incur the wrath and displeasure of his boss.

Only God knew how Azuree and Yaovi lived in the same Guest House for one whole week without bumping into each other. It came to a time when the receptionist nearly broke Azuree’s promise but she advised herself.
After Interpol alerted the Ghana Police Service about Yaovi crossing borders into Nigeria, Annahs was cautioned to be careful around town since Yaovi had many links in town.
He was also informed that the police department has been infiltrated so he had to be extra careful with releasing any information to them.
According to Interpol, the top hierarchy of the Police Department had a divided front on how to combat this particular crime.
Azuree in his room thought about the whole case and wondered whether it was worth pursuing.
*What is this all about? Why disturb myself? The people who claim they are helping us are not cooperating.”
When we finish this assignment, the next Institution we will investigate will be the Police Service,” he said to himself.
“The crime in the crime fighter’s department is too alarming. This is too much.”
Snapping out of his thoughts, he called his Assistant in Ghana to give him the latest update as he prepares to come home.
“Friday is my departure day. I need to work out a strategy before I move. I am confused as to whether to take the Aflao border or the Segbe border. The journey will determine my route. You never know. You never can tell…”

All hell broke loose at the headquarters as Commander Carlos summoned all the officers who went for the operation.
“This is unacceptable,” he blurted out.
“And you call yourselves professionals?”
” I will make sure you are demoted. Just pray hard that the IGP does not give me a query. If he does, you are all in trouble.”
Sergeant Wiredu, the officer who earlier on requested that more arms should be taken for the operation decided not to say a word lest he further incurs the wrath and displeasure of his boss.
The next day at the security briefing, the issue was the first on the agenda. The IGP, though very furious, was composed but demanded an explanation from Commander Carlos.
In his statement, Commander Carlos stated, “I am as angry as you are Sir, if not more. The guys messed up. I have set up a committee to investigate this mess. The truth will surely come out. I can assure you, Sir.”
“I am also setting a committee to equally investigate this matter” the IGP responded.
“Sir, this will be counter-productive. Let’s finish our investigations and if you are not happy with the outcome, you can do it again.”
“No Commander Carlos! What I have said is final.”
” I rather insist and as a matter of urgency that you halt the work of your said committee which you even convened without any approval.”
“Let me have their names so I can add some of them to a central committee to properly investigate this.”

“Commander Carlos, I have no doubts about your abilities but you have to understand what is at stake here: the whole nation is watching.”
The IGP brought the meeting to a close and left for his office.
As God will have it, Yaovi was walking into the guest house one evening when Azuree who was quietly seated in the lobby, spotted him.
He was shocked at what he saw and confused at the same time.
After what seemed like a dream ended, he quickly jumped to his feet and followed him closely.
He saw him enter room 15.
“Should I enquire from the receptionist?”
“No, that will be suicidal.”
“Let me just pack out and move now while I process this nightmare. My eyes have indeed seen my ears.”
He quickly moved to his room, packed his things, and told the lady he had to move to attend to an urgent call.
He called the Interpol office and gave them the address of the guest house.
“Please move immediately before he leaves that place.”
Yaovi later received a call from his colleague in Surulere that he had to leave the country immediately because some people were spying on him.
“Impossible! You don’t even know where I am staying and you are talking of spying. It can’t happen.”
“You see your arrogance again?“ the caller reacted, quite vexed at his attitude.
“Please move out of this country in the next 48 hours.”
“I will think about it.”
That night he decided to take a stroll to rethink his game plan.
At the reception, he decided to ask the lady if she had seen any new faces in the past few days.

“Your Yetunde, the receptionist realizing that Azuree had left, decided to open up.
countryman was here for one week but he left yesterday night.”
“You mean a Ghanaian was here? Why didn’t you tell me?“
“He warned me not to tell anybody and I gave him my word.”
“I am only telling you now because he is gone and you asked me.”
“That’s okay, but what is his name?“
“Any issue sir?”
“We have been looking for a distant cousin for two years now.”
“The last time we heard about him, we were told that he frequents Oshodi and Ikeja anytime he comes to Nigeria.”
“Well sir, this particular man has been here four times this year.”
“The name he gives any time he comes here is Azu,” she told him.
“Okay, I don’t know him.”
He quickly left for his room.
“What? This is not funny.”
“This guy might be right after all. What do I do now.”
When Azuree arrived in Badagry, he suddenly decided to take the Owode route.
He got to the Owode border and got a bike guy who helped him to cross successfully.

Instead of taking the Lome-bound cab, he decided to go through Port Novo.
“The gang I am dealing with cannot be predicted,” he thought to himself.
Yaovi was just about to leave the guest house when he heard a knock at the door.
“Are you Yaovi Agyei?”
“Yes I am and what can my honorable self do for you?”
“You are under arrest.”
“Please, you have to come with us to the Interpol Division of the Nigerian Police Force.”
“Can I know the purpose of this stupid arrest?”
“Please follow us to the station.”
“The stupid arrest will make sense over there.”

“Look guys, we can talk about this thing quietly before we get to the station. Mention any amount and I bet you I will not negotiate,” Yaovi tried wooing the officers from Interpol.
“We are not buyable. I’ve been in this job for 30 good years.”
“Let me just let you know that you have come to the end of the road. I pity you,” the second officer added.
“When you guys see officers, you suddenly think they are hungry people, Right?”
Meanwhile, Annahs Azuree was planning to leave for Cotonou when he had a text message from his team. It read, ‘use the beach road when you get to the Benin border at the Togo side.
When you finally get into Togo, whichever way possible, enter Ghana through the Wli Afegame border.”
“We know it sounds crazy but just follow the plan. All the southern borders have been captured by our opponents”
“Eii! Wli Afegame? This is ridiculous!”
“For the first time, I may have to disobey my guys. If I were to be continuing to my hometown, Kpassa, it would have made sense.”
At the station, Interpol had already decided that Yaovi should be sent to Ghana on the next available flight so he could be tried in Ghana.
Commander Carlos, aware of this development had already leaked the information to Yoavi’s men. Not only that, but he has also decided to use the same tactic so that Yaovi could escape at the airport immediately after touching down.

The beach way at the Benin Border entering Togo is a well-known route. My major problem now is entering Ghana through Wli. I will have to buy some cutlasses in Coutonou.
The day sergeant Wiredu was slated to testify before the committee, commander Carlos sent him on another operation in the Eastern Region with a disguised motive that he was one of the best men he had. The operation was to last for four days. Since he was also aware of Yaovi’s arrival in two days he wanted to keep him off the stage so they could have a smooth ride.
“Alhaji, what I am doing for you guys is very risky. When your man arrives at the airport, I will rescue him for you. I also promise that on his next trip, I will personally block all chances for those small boys at the airport so that he can carry the thing safely to his destination.”
“But one more thing, this time round, don’t give me any cash. The way the IGP’s eye is on me, let’s not risk anything. Just buy me two houses in Trasaco estate.”
“Consider it done but do the work first.”Money for hand, back for ground Alhaji assured him”
When Annahs got to the border, he carried the cutlasses on his shoulder purporting to be a cutlass seller. So like a sales boy, he managed to cross into Togo through the beach way.
There were only two passengers left when he arrived at the station. Two Nigerian Igbo boys going to Ghana.

“We have one more to go. Are you guys not late? Why don’t you guys agree so we share the cost of the last seat so we get to Lome on time?” Annahs requested.
After communicating in Igbo, to the confusion of Annahs, they agreed.
“Are you going to Ghana for the first time?” he asked the young men.
“Ah! no ooo. For the past five years, we have operated a book and grocery shop in Accra.”
“Our younger sister just got married and as custom demands, we had to be there.”
“So when did you leave Ghana for Nigeria?”
“Just last week,” they told him.
“And you won’t stay there small?”
“Orga, business is our blood wire.”
“So how is Ghana? ” “Since you guys left just last week, you’ll be abreast with current issues.”
“Everything is okay. These days on the news, the police have been talking tough on issues of public interest.”
“There is this cocaine issue that has refused to die down. The lead independent investigator, one Annahs Azuree, who they believe has been a thorn in the flesh of the barons is even feared dead.”
“Really? I also heard about it but I didn’t know it has become that serious.”
“Very serious ooo Sir, but wetin concern cat plus grass? We dey mind our business.”
To the surprise of the two brothers, Annahs decided to alight at a small taxi terminal that takes people to the big market popularly known as Ashigame.

“We thought you will follow us to cross the Aflao border.” They exchanged contact and before the taxi left he told them to save his name as Ghana man.
Azuree went to the big market for two reasons. One was to resell his cutlass and the second was to take an available vehicle to Kpalime where he could get a direct vehicle to Wli.
On the blind side of commander Carlos, Sergeant Wiredu had given a tip-off to the IGP about his unit heads operations.
So unknown to Commander Carlos, the IGP had secretly deployed another team to monitor the events of Yoavi’s arrival at the airport.
As expected, the unknown gunmen overpowered the authorized police that commander Carlos sent.
This was when the men sent by the IGP decided to chase down Commander Carlos’ operatives.
There was a clash with heavy gunshot exchanges. It was so bad that the police lost one man while the other group lost four men.
Yaovi who was in the custody of the unknown gunmen sustained serious injuries. He was later rushed to the nearby hospital where he was confirmed dead.

Life has a way of paying everybody with their coin.
The death of Yaovi came as a shock to both friends and foes. Having used his ill-gotten money to create solid contacts all over the country, the news of his death spread like wildfire.
Commander Carlos, knowing very well that the table will turn against him, called Alhaji to brief him on the alternatives he has as far as the business was concerned.
Information gathered from the luggage of Yaovi pinned down Commander Carlos as one of his accomplices. It did not take too long for the Police Service to come to this conclusion having seen many text messages exchanged between the duo.
Commander Carlos knew that this was a bad case. Meanwhile, time seemed not to be on his side.
“Should I run away?” He taught to himself. “Run to where? I will get a good lawyer if need be. It’s a matter of proving my case.”
Annahs arrived at Kpalime, one of the major towns in the middle belt of Togo. Unfortunately, he had to take another car to Adeta, which was the only way he could get a Wli Afegame-bound vehicle.
“This life no balance oo. I hope nobody recognizes me here. ” Annahs said to himself under his breadth.
“This Yaovi guy will rot in jail. You can’t hold a whole nation to ransom and punish me like this. I have become like a fugitive just because I want justice to be done.”

When he finished talking to himself, he realized that one of his phones was missing. This phone had a sim card with his mobile money. There was little information on it but this particular sim card had sufficient money to at least take him to Accra.
“What am I going to do now? Chai! Problem no dey finish for this life. My God, only you are good but this life ‘dieee ino’ balance at all. Life is not fair,” he mused.
“What will I do when I get to Hohoe, now?”
With his thoughts all muddled up, he played several scenarios in his head.
“Should I beg?”
“To beg might mean I have to reveal some bits of my identity.”
“What of texting my guys so they send me money through a vendor.”
“No! that could be suicidal.”
” I will surely have an idea when I get to Hohoe.”
The families of Yaovi received the demise of Yaovi with mixed feelings.
A few of the family members who had some bits and pieces of information about the shady dealings of their brother were not surprised.
But the larger family unit who were in the dark saw this as a bad omen and a drawback for the family.
It became too much of a shame when the Interior Minister gave a press conference to tell the whole country of developments concerning the case and Yaovi’s death.

“You are all aware of the development that took place a few days ago. There is a need to bring clarity to the general public and to correct some misinformation the public is being fed with.”
It is true that Yaovi, the baron suffered a gunshot injury during the exchange between the police service and those sent to take him by force. It is equally true that he passed away few minutes after reaching the hospital.”
“However, I want to clarify that the police did not intentionally eliminate him. Why do such a thing when we are at the brink of our investigations?”
“The truth of the matter is that his death is a loss to us. A loss because there are vital pieces of information that we thought we could have fished out from him.”
“The public should also be aware that we have established the fact about the cross-section of the police involvement in the syndicate. This is a big blow to the Police Service and I believe that the IGP is taking steps to state in that regard. The ring leader will be named, shamed, and jailed when found guilty in a competent court of jurisdiction.”
“This syndicate is a whole network of well-connected people. Is not every information we can share here. I can only assure you that we will get them all.”
“Annahs Azuree, the investigative journalist has still not been cited. The last time we heard about him, Interpol told us about his entry into Nigeria.”

“We were also reliably informed that he was the one who gave the tip-off about Yaovi’s arrest.”

“Finally, evil against the state is evil against every well-meaning Ghanaian. Sadly, he died but what can we do? His body will be released to his family after further probes. ”
“I have this advice for all of us, particularly the youth: there is dignity in work and always remember that a good name is better than money.”
“Thank you and God bless you all.”
It was around 3 pm when the vehicle got to the Wli Afegame border. Crossing to the Ghana side was quite easy for him. With the little French at his disposal, he mumbled a few lines and they made him pass through.
As for the immigration personnel at post on the Ghana side, the trending story he was reading in the Daily Graphic kept him busy so there was no issue sailing through the border.
“How much is the fare to Hohoe?“ he asked the driver who was waiting for one more passenger to leave.
“15 ghana cedis, boss,” the driver answered.
Thankfully, that was the last money he had on him.
“Please let’s go,” he told the driver

You could feel a sense of sadness and loss at the Family House of Yaovi in Golo Kwati, near Hohoe. His mother who had warned him occasionally about his lifestyle sat at a distance as the family head and his elders arrived to plan his funeral.
“Agoo! This is a tragedy for the family,” he began. “The last time I saw Yaovi was when he came for our late chief’s funeral.” “It’s sad it ended this way.” “For now, all I will say is this: if you think you have never sinned, throw the first stone.” The grounds had become as dead silent as a cemetery. No one dared to speak nor even murmur.
The funeral Banner was then hoisted at the gate of the family house, situated by the roadside. After the last meeting, the date for the funeral was set.
The family decided to go low-key at the funeral. Alhaji and his team upon hearing the date were planning to attend but changed their minds based on Intel’s received that there may be a heavy police presence at the grounds. Alhaji decided not to risk it by showing up.
“Let’s just send some money after the burial, to his parents,” he said to his teammates. Azureh, upon reaching the outskirts of Hohoe, heard a discussion on a blood donation exercise that was to take place in a week’s time in Hohoe.
Officials of the Regional Hospital in Hohoe were on air sensitizing the general public about the need to donate blood to save lives. The host of the program asked if blood could be donated for commercial gain.

The official said it was possible but a lot of things will have to be taken into consideration. “Driver, please I was to alight before the traffic light,” Annahs said. On getting down, he took a bike straight to the hospital.
“I want to donate some blood for some money.” “Please, we need to screen you and then you have to eat well before we start the process. “
“I have eaten sufficiently please.” The screening lasted for some time but he was more than willing to wait. An amount of ghc 150 was given to Annahs for the donation.
“Oh God,” he exclaimed to himself, “my blood money has arrived. Madina station, it is, right away. I need to get to Accra tonight.”
He decided to walk a bit before boarding a cab to the station. About some meters away from the EP park near the Hospital, Annahs noticed two young ladies approaching.
He recognized them instantly as close friends of his. It would be disastrous, to say the least, if they were to spot him or call out to him.
“What will I do now? Immediately a thought dropped in his head, he ducked quickly to the shop near the park where coffins were being made and sold. Realizing that the owner was not at the post, he entered one of the coffins and closed it gently.
“What are Memuna and Jessica doing in Hohoe this faithful day?” “What have I not seen in this short life of mine? Oh, God. Save my soul.”
“Wait, I saw someone like Annahs entering that shop in front of us.” “It’s not possible,” Memuna protested. “That Agamah lizard called Annahs? It’s not possible…”

“Okay, no need for an argument. Just follow me” Jessica insisted. When they got there, they met an empty shop except for the coffins lined up for sale.
“So, where is he? Or do you want to say he has entered one of the coffins?” “Yes, what can I offer you, young ladies, the shop owner thundered from behind. “We make every shape and size of a coffin.” “We eat from peoples’ demise,” he continued in an attempt to sound funny.
“Not at all, Sir.” “We thought we saw someone entering your shop but we just realized that our eyes were playing tricks on us.” A call came through to the shop owner at that moment.
“Carpenter, I hope you are ready for us.” “We are picking up the coffin at 5 pm,” the caller said. “I am more than ready for you, sir.” That was Yaovi’s Nephew. He was put in charge of the coffin for his uncle’s funeral.
Annahs, still in the coffin started texting his people. “In case you don’t see me again, give all my entitlements to my wife and children….FOREVER
“Tell my Lawyer to facilitate all documents so my land at Madina is given to my wife and children.
“Ah! why is the coffin so heavy?” Yaovi`s cousin asked when he arrived at the shop together with some family members. “It’s quality wood. I gave you the very best. You know I don’t play with my work.”

“But this is too heavy .” I finished polishing it after you left here in the morning.” Annahs decided to shake himself in the coffin when they were about to take the coffin into the waiting car.
Out of fear, they dropped the coffin while it opened on its own accord. The whole place went haywire. No one could boldly look in that direction.
What made Annahs so nervous was that he saw the picture of Yaovi on the T-shirt of one of the young men as they took to their heels.
Ghosts, ghosts they shouted as they all fled the scene. Knowing the area very well, Annahs run after them as if to chase them. Seeing that he was out of sight, he quickly stopped a bike that had no idea of what had transpired. “How are you? Sir. Please take me to the station.”
At the family house of Yaovi, news reached that a ghost was seen in his coffin. There were wailing and tears when the vehicle Annahs boarded reached Golo Kwati.
it was when the bus got to Golo Kwati and saw the Obituary of Yaovi on the hoisted banner, that it dawned on him that the coffin he slept in might have been that of Yaovi.
“Hmm… What a life! I don’t know how I would have survived if not for that coffin. At last, it was the coffin of he who wanted me dead that saved me.”
“As for me, I am going to Accra. I will take so long a break before I embark on my next assignment.”
