Something Must Humble a Man……. Seth Agbeli Kunkpe
The more I think about life, the more I come to the conclusion that we all need humility as human beings. The truth is that we all claim to be humble. You will hardly see a man who will publicly admit he has pride in him.
In our pomposity, we are quick to notice pride in others but not in ourselves. As I brood over these issues of life, I realize that God, in His mercy, takes us through certain circumstances and challenges just to instill a sense of humility in us.
This is my personal discovery after a little over two decades of walking with the Lord. I have come to realize that certain things humble me as a man. It is very easy to be full of pride without even knowing it.
Sometimes it takes rough and tough moments to reveal the depths of pride in us. I want to share with you four things that humble me as a young adult. These things literally sweep me off my feet in awe of my God.
The first is the sins of my past. Sometimes it takes just a flash to remember something I have done before. When those moments pop up in my mind, I am quickly reminded of how merciful God has been to save a wretch like me. Sometimes, when I am high-handed with young people, the Lord reminds me that I have also done that before. This humbles me.

This makes me climb down from my high horse of self-righteousness and high-mindedness. So this is who I was when He found me. It makes me know that it’s the Lord’s mercy that keeps us from being consumed.
The second thing that makes my humility come alive is the difficulties and challenges of life. This is a hard place to be. Challenges humble me a lot. They sometimes make me understand that life is not as easy as we think it should be. This drives my dependence on God.
That I am nothing without Him. That no matter how high I fly, there is a God who is beyond my imagination and thinking. That I am nothing if not for God.
Have you ever been accused and didn’t know how to defend yourself, knowing full well that you are innocent? This is the third thing that humbles me: the accusations of men. This can be a difficult place to be. There are times my actions or inactions could be misinterpreted.
There are days you feel the need to explain but don’t know how. There are times you know you are wrong but are scared of the consequences. Have you been caught in these kinds of entanglements before? I have experienced some of these things.
The accusations of men are a source of humility for me. Coming to the realization that no matter what I do, some issues will never go away, some accusations will remain with you until death unless God intervenes.

It particularly becomes painful when you know you are innocent. That’s life for you. I tell you, my dear reader, this humbles me a lot. All I can do when these issues arise is to trust the Lord to see me through.
The fourth one is the unknown future. This is a big one. Today you can count on, but who knows the entirety of tomorrow and the future? This is why we are shocked when we hear of the death of loved ones. No one knows the future. No, not one.
We can do all our planning and forecasting, but there is always a puzzle about the unknown future. This humbles me to the core. No one knows the date of his death. Or do you?
These four things, to me, make me humble as a human being and as a Christian. I am but dust if not for the life of God in me. It is His grace that sees me through every phase of life.
What humbles you as a human being? Please share with me.
For the love of God, society, and young people,
Blessings.
