Roll Up Your Sleeves- Let Bishop Dag Inspire You

The secrets for the success of men lie in their stories. When you listen to their stories and apply the principles they live by where necessary, you achieve the same results.

One of the principles that Bishop Dag holds dear and teaches his pastors to adhere to without shame, is the principle of rolling up your sleeves.

The Bishop of the UD-OLGC has told his pastors time without number that, one strategy to help one come out of obscurity and lack, is to deliberately roll up one’s sleeves.

What does this principle mean? According to him, the fact that you have been called to do the work of God does not mean you should not do anything. No matter how small, to support your immediate family.

As far as the he is concerned, a pastor who wants to emerge out of obscurity, should engage in little ‘things’ that can help cushion the family and save some money. In addition, he teaches that, it is not everything you should buy with money, when you can do it yourself.

The principle in effect means don’t feel too ‘big’ to do ‘certain things. Get to the gutter and do the ‘little things’ that can at least reduce your cost of living.

The Bishop recommends subsistence farming (if it’s possible), animal rearing and other economic activities that can help feed your family. It is interesting to note, that at a point in his life, he had some cows in adherence to this principle.

We live in the day and age where in the name of full-time service, we the young pastors don’t want to lift a finger to do anything. All because God has called us.  Honestly, nothing wrong about that, but the advice here is simple.

As a young pastor, what will it cost you to have a back yard garden?

As a young person what will it cost you to rear some fowls at home to help the family.

Note that buying everything you need with money does not necessarily mean you have a lot of money, it could just mean you have less wisdom.

There are many things ‘rolling up your sleeve’ can get for you without using money. There are simple things that a little farm. A little fish pond, a little hen coop among others, can do for your family without you compromising on the main ‘things’ you do.

The point should also be made that this advice may not apply to everybody and every situation.

You should know yourself, your environment and know what will work for you. This article is not meant to drive you out of your calling or main assignment all in the name of ‘rolling up your sleeve’. However, it will be absurd for someone to read this and start paying little attention to his or her main calling because Bishop Dag said: ‘roll up your sleeve’. Please and please context is key so decipher the message as such.

How good and pleasant it will be if a pastor has basic necessities at home so he could concentrate on the ministry of the word and prayer. It should also be known that this advice does not only apply to pastors and church workers. Everybody can practice this and get the good out of it.
