What you have to understand about Weddings- Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo
Over the years, Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo has carved a niche for himself as a teacher on issues relating to family life and love relationships.
I have been his student for a few years now and I must say, he has proven to be a man worth listening to. Together with his wife, Pastor Mildred, they have consistently taught lifetime principles on family life to my admiration and the inspiration of many.
As part of my work as a writer, I have decided to review messages and books for the reading public. My intention in this adventure is to satisfy my quest to reduce ignorance as it relates to matters that pertain to life and godliness.
A wedding has become the pomp of our days to the extent that many prepare more for the wedding these days than they prepare for the marriage.
The average young person will do all it takes to have a fantastic wedding to the admiration of the entire public but when you ask that same person about the marriage that is to take a lifetime, you will be shocked at the level of awareness he or she has.

It is in light of this and many issues relating to this problem that Pastor Kingsley took his time to break down what people should understand about weddings as it relates to marriage.
- According to Pastor Kingsley, one thing young people have to bear in mind when they are about to marry is that the wedding ceremony is for people while the marriage itself is for the couple. One may ask: why then will you spend all your energy on the wedding ceremony and not use half of that energy to equip yourself for the marriage itself? I want you to understand that mostly, all the efforts you are putting in place are really because of people. The tendency to impress people at weddings has suppressed many young people with pain, anxiety, and debt.
Be guided when you want to marry just so that people will enjoy your wedding. The broader question will be this: Will you also enjoy your marriage as they enjoyed the wedding?
- Wedding is for a few hours but marriage is for life. I know everybody knows this fact, but the issue here is that investment for weddings these days has by far surpassed the investment for marriage. You will see a young man who has not read a single book on marriage and has refused to go for counseling but he is all over the place spending for the wedding because his friends will be coming. What makes me sick the more is that, if you dig deeper, he might have impregnated the young lady already. You can choose to disagree with me but trust me, I have been around for some time.
So, what’s the point? Go for knowledge about the marriage that may take about 50 years of your life. the wedding may only take 5 hours.

- Wedding is a ceremony but marriage is a covenant. Let me explain. A covenant is a deeper involvement between two people. It’s an agreement that binds people and God is the principal witness. The wedding is a ceremony where people gather to wish you well on the covenant journey you are about to take. The focus should always be on the marriage and not just the wedding. Covenants are deeper than ceremonies.
- Wedding does not change Character. This is a huge point that needs to be unpacked. I have always maintained that marriage in one way, is a character-training school. This should be clear. The wedding will not stretch your character but marriage will. The wedding will not reveal your character but marriage will. You might get angry because the cake was delayed on your wedding day but that anger is just the tip of the ocean. More ‘delays’ await you in the school of character training called marriage. ( this is not a joke)
Wow! Hope I made some sense in explaining the points my teacher in family life gave. If you have any problem with my explanations, I take full responsibility.
